I think permanent eyeliner is the most underappreciated PMU service out there. Everyone’s focused on brows and lip blush, but eyeliner quietly changes everything about how a face reads. And unlike brows, it requires almost zero maintenance once it’s healed. People who get it always wonder why they waited so long.
What It Is
Permanent eyeliner is a cosmetic tattoo placed along the lash line of the upper eye, lower eye, or both. You wake up with defined eyes every day. No smudging, no raccoon eyes by noon, no trying to get both sides even. Just done.
The Different Styles
Not everyone wants the same thing, and the style matters a lot depending on your eye shape and lifestyle:
- Lash Line Enhancement — pigment placed right between the lashes. Looks like thicker, fuller lashes rather than liner. Perfect if you don’t normally wear eyeliner but want more definition.
- Classic Liner — a clean line on the upper lash line. As thin or thick as you want.
- Winged Liner — classic liner with a tail. Creates a lifted, elongated eye. More precise to place.
- Lower Lash Line — a soft line underneath. Usually done with a slightly smudged effect. Can be done on its own or combined with upper liner.
Does It Hurt?
The eyelid is thin, so it numbs well. Most clients are genuinely surprised by how comfortable it is. Usually described as vibration or light pressure, nothing sharp. The appointment runs about 1.5 to 2 hours.
How It Heals
Eyeliner is actually one of the faster-healing PMU services:
- Days 1-2: A little swollen, looks darker than the final result.
- Days 3-5: Light flaking. Don’t pick at it.
- Days 7-10: Most of the peeling is done. Liner looks lighter and softer.
- Weeks 4-6: Healed color settles in.
Contact lens wearers — you’ll need to remove your lenses for the appointment and keep them out for a few days after. Bring your glasses.
How Long Does It Last?
3 to 5 years typically. The eye area is constantly moving and skincare products affect it, so it fades faster than you’d think. A maintenance session every few years keeps it looking clean.
A Few Things That Would Disqualify You
Active eye infections, styes, or pink eye — we wait until those are fully cleared. Recent eye surgery like LASIK or cataract surgery needs at least a year and a medical clearance. If you’re using a lash growth serum like Latisse, you need to stop at least 3 months before your appointment because those serums change the eyelid tissue.
